Available Courses
The Marriage and Family Therapy
Program at The Colorado School for Family Therapy has candidacy status
with the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education
of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 112 Alfred
Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, 703-838-9808. The candidacy period is effective
July 31, 2001 to July 31, 2006.
A Certificate in Marriage and
Family Therapy is awarded upon successful completion of the course and
supervision requirements in the Marriage and Family Therapy Training Program.
The program emphasis is placed on the clinical practice of marriage and
family therapy and the leadership, business and career development of
the student.
Family and marital therapy
is taught from a systems/relational perspective for assisting and intervening
with a wide variety of human problems. Live supervision enables students
to extend their knowledge of effective systemic therapeutic skills.
Students must complete a total
of 12 Standard Didactic Units (SDUs)/12 graduate or postgraduate level
courses to gain a Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy. Prior to
graduation, students must have completed these classes between their Master’s
program and the School’s Marriage and Family Therapy Training
Program. Students must also complete a professional project and presentation
prior to graduation.
The School offers twelve
distance learning/independent classes in
the areas most states require for LMFT licensure and the AAMFT requires
for Clinical Member status. There are classes in marriage and family studies,
human development, professional and ethical issues, research methods,
and marriage and family therapy.

Educational
Objectives
- The program will maintain
a faculty, student body, and client population representative of the
program mission and the desired diversity for the marriage and family
field.
- The program will graduate
students prepared for the multiple accountabilities of state licensure,
professional organization membership and practicing the mental health
profession in the contemporary marketplace.
- The program will graduate
students able to effectively integrate theoretical, clinical, spiritual,
religious, cultural, ethical, personal, leadership, diversity, career,
and business issues in their practice of systemic/relational marriage
and family therapy.

Training
Program Goals
- The program will supervise,
mentor, educate and graduate students competent to provide systemic/relational
marriage and family therapy in the unique context where they serve.
- The program will contribute
to the diversity of the marriage and family therapy field by training
and graduating students representative of the cultural, religious, spiritual,
ethnic, racial, gender, and other diversities of our area.
- The program will prepare
the graduated students for licensure, diversity, business and career
development, and leadership in the mental health profession and the
marriage and family discipline.

Graduation
Requirements
Clinical Training
- At least 500 hours of face-to-face
clinical contact hours
- No more than 250 hours
of these same 500 hours may occur off site. 250 of these same 500 hours
must be relational in nature, meaning that two or more people are in
the room with the therapist
Supervision
- The ratio of supervision
may not exceed 5 hours of clinical to 1 hours of supervision, i.e.,
150 hours minimum
- 50% of supervision must
be based on Raw Data: video, audio or live

Students must have completed
the minimum courses prior to graduation:

- 2 courses - Individual Development
and Family Relations
- 1 course - Professional
Identity and Ethics

- 1 course - Additional Learning

If students have not met some
of these requirements in their master's or other graduate programs, the
coursework must be completed at the School prior to graduation.
